What are the Draconis Magus Mammilis?
Bluntly? They are an ancient breed of dragon better known by the name "Milk Dragon" for a small variety of reasons.
When magic formed the world it did so through the five primal elements given form as dragons. The were Earth, Fire, Water, Wind, and energy (represented as lightning). From the primal dragons new sub-breeds were bred over time, diversifiying to suit their homes but losing a fair bit of primal magic in the process, becoming mortal creatures. Milk dragons were not such a case, they are a failed creation instead, from an attempt to make a new primal dragon to represent the power of humans, who had been making a nuisance of themselves for the primals. They managed to get a small token of man's undying determination and their most spectacular (And exploitable) nature, kindness. But, they also attained the 'impure' nature of being a mammal, considered too distant from proud reptiles to be a true dragon. They were left to develop alone in the aether since dragon law forbade their extermination.
What do the milk dragons look like?
Being created, magical things milk dragons have no genetic base to alter their nature or adapt their bodies, following basic and consistant rules for their form and function.
They stand from paw to whithers (Shoulders) between 5.4 and 6.2 feet for males, and 5 to 5.6 feet for females. Their necks and tails are always exactly 0.6 times the length of their torso and hindquarters (Except in hatchlings, who are hatched with necks and tails 0.3 times their length, growing out as they age.) and their wings are exactly the same length of their full body.
Their scales are always a deep green with pearly highlight when in good health, with a chestnut mane running from the head down to the shoulders, ending between the wing joints. The mane tends to grow well but never exceeds a length greater than that which is desired by the dragon itself. When the dragon wants their mane shorter it will moult on it's own.
Their body is powerful and slim, but slightly blocky in the hindquarters. Their forepaws end in three claws spaced evenly apart, with good enough dexterity for gross manipulation and grabbing. The hindpaws has similar claws, although they tend to be less useful for maniuplaiton.
Their skull has a snout that is tapering and blunted like a canine's, with slightly curved long horns sprouting from the top. Their noses are slim slits instead of anything fancy, although they do posess thicker lips like that of a horse or camel, they are even able to smile without showing off teeth. They posess an omnivore's dental setup despite having no physical need for food inside the aether, with a 60%/40% split for carnivore and herbivore teeth. Their tongues are also tapering rather than forked, able to exetnd to twice their snout's length. Quite impressive!
There are dense plates running from the neck down along the entire body to the end of their tails where it meets the dragon's most unique aspect, a completely individual spade. Some are sharp, some soft, curved, straight, point, gentle. It's the easiest way to identify one dragon from another. The plates do not cover a female's belly as well as a male's however, slightly chevroned for more skin area, showing off eight thick teats once they are mature.
Unlike lizards milk dragon's don't have a cloaca, and although their genital slit resembles one it is set too far foward (Preciesly, just behind tail-base) with their anus well hidden out of sight by drooping, lazy tails.
Life-cycle, breeding.
Milk dragons can breed year round with eggs produced at a maximum of once every five years. Eggs gestate for half a year before being laid, hatching the next spring, or else one week after laying. The precise nature of such time-delayed hatching seems to be linked to weather and is almost entirely reliable, although unlucky whelps have been recorded to hatch mid-winter as well.
The hatched whelps nurse exclusivly for five years, then as part of their diet and social bonding for the next fifteen years. Given they are always hatched as ether single whelps or twins the broodmothers are able to care or up to eight hatchlings at once.
From 20 until 100 whelps eat mostly foraged fruit and vegtables, small game, and fish, moving on to larger prey as they age. Social development becomes very important at this time as well, with days mostly spent learning from adults, foraging, hunting, and playing.
At around 100 years of age whelps drakes and dragonettes become fully fleged adults, with females developing thicker teats and wider hips whilst males develop broader crowns (The area between the horns and eyebrows) and bulkier forelegs.
Once females become adults they begin to lactate in advance, a questionable biological feature but the most well known traits among the dragons as the milk is both highly nutritional regardless of the mother' diet, magically empowering, and bestows good health to the afflicted. It has been suggested males could be 'milked' also but the effects of the their fluids has been entirely lewd, and most would consider worthless. This has placed a higher price on females over males for all except the perverse.
Social life and society.
When they were created milk dragons inhereted from early man something that no other primordial dragon has, warmth. They possess the powers of love and kindess, to act in other's interests and for seemingly illogical virtue, this has many odd effects on them. Their fire was tempered and despite still being able to start blazes the fire can do no harm, instead it is gentle and warm, invitingly welcoming life to heal. They area also almost incapable of true malice or hate, shown in their tone of voice and a general feeling around them. They are hard to hate as they can't truely hate others, with few exceptions made. Only a milk dragon who's heart bears darkness caused by grief can hate and it is something that is said eternally mark them.
Their natural urges linger towards whimsical magical affairs and care for one-another, social gatherings and reclusive getaways make the bulk of their lives in the land where to exist is it's own reward. With little for entertainment they enjoy pranks and games much like fairy dragons.
Milk dragons do not have a strict hiaracy system of respect enforced through strength, due to their goodwilled nature they value respect earned through respectable actions and posess a very simple social standing based on their sexual dimorphism. Females respect males as leaders and workers, whilst males respect females as mothers and healers. Even then, males are always considered above females due to their lower inherant "value" in the outside world requiring greater effort on their part, as well as off-loading some worry from females who know that males are expected to provide for them in exchange.
There are small signs of respect shown to one another regardless of sex and status.
Greetings are always conducted with sniffing when out and about and formalities aren't required. It starts with snouts, then progresses to the sides and belly, and if the pair are feeling especially trusting will allow genital sniffing too. This is only used as a show of trust though, given all those sharp teeth.
Outside the aether, in the outside world, they have adapted well to living in more modern society, enjoying the man-made wonders of fine construction and technology. Whilst they temper their natual urges for mischief the dragons have found themselves struggling in the more power and dominance related world, abandoning their way of life in small areas where it isn't practical but always maintaining their good nature.
In modern society and built up housing hatchlings number fewer due to scarcer food, given the effort required for den-training hatchlings however this loss of brood-size is a mild bonus as nappies (diapers) make a poor replacement for the trenches dug through their natural homes in the eyes of some, as well, chew-toys tend to be harder to find in bulk when dense trees are no longer availible. Whilst the hatchlings are undeniably cute when dressed up to modern standards their long development time makes them an overall hassel in the 'real' world with only the wealthy dragons able to support a full brood all at once.
On Magic
Being primal magic creatures at heart they posess a full spectrum of addative magic (The five base elements.). They, like most, are unwilling to persue the subtractive magics created by dark emotion and blood sacrifice. Most have settled into the system of magic schools, although some contest this and point to the free, wild magic as their true nature. They are able to manipulate any magic from any non-dark 'school' as they please even if they don't follow the thought of schools but they will never be able to use magic as well as the other primal dragons.
Unlike the primal dragons and most others, their inherant effects of kindess and the inner fire gives them interesting flaws and perks that manifest in particular dragons in unimmaginable ways.
It should be noted that the dragons do not hve infinite magic, as expending too much magical energy will cause them to become visibly rough around the edges before dissipating into light. That which was never alive is not garunteed an existance despite all immitations, they learn to moderate themselves well to ensure their survival. Some dragons have since crafted clever ways to avoid dissipation, by reducing their physical size (And thus reducing the magical energy needed to exist) or by way of storing energy in a way similar to blood-letting, but it is widely frowned upon to harm oneself in such ways.
